Closed ultraviolet disinfector belongs to pressure type. It uses metal chamber and ultraviolet lamp with quartz sleeve to seal the disinfected water. It is also called chamber type, pipeline type, and overflow ultraviolet disinfector. According to the relationship between the ultraviolet lamp axis and the direction of water flow, the water flow in the closed ultraviolet disinfector can be parallel or perpendicular to the ultraviolet lamp axis. Parallel system has small hydraulic loss and uniform flow pattern, while vertical system can make water flow turbulent and improve disinfection efficiency.
The size and distribution of light intensity in disinfection reactor will directly affect the inactivation effect of microorganisms. Usually stainless steel or aluminum alloy are polished to improve the reflectivity and radiation intensity of ultraviolet radiation. The number of ultraviolet lamps will be adjusted according to the amount quantity of treated water. Some disinfectors are equipped with spiral blades on the inner wall of the chamber to change the flow state and to avoid stagnant water and pipeline blockage. The turbulence and sharp edges of the blades will break up suspended solids so that the attached microorganisms are completely exposed to ultraviolet radiation. With that the disinfection efficiency can be improved.

The closed chamber UV disinfector is typically used in medium or small water process or in situation requiring pressure, or the UV reactor is better not used in open-channel.
